Renewable energy comes from sources that are naturally replenished, such as sunlight, wind and flowing water. It plays an important role in reducing dependence on finite fossil fuels, but each technology has its own infrastructure, land, material and environmental considerations.

Solar energy

Solar photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into electricity. Output varies with daylight, weather, orientation and system design, so storage or grid electricity may still be needed when generation is low.

Wind energy

Wind turbines convert moving air into electricity. Both onshore and offshore wind contribute to electricity generation, with suitability depending on wind conditions, planning, grid connections and environmental considerations.

Hydroelectric power

Hydropower uses moving or falling water to generate electricity. It can provide dependable generation in suitable locations, although dams and other infrastructure can affect landscapes and ecosystems.

Tidal and wave energy

Tidal systems use predictable movements of seawater, while wave technologies capture energy from surface motion. These technologies have different levels of commercial deployment and location requirements.

Bioenergy

Bioenergy uses organic material as a fuel or feedstock. Whether a particular system delivers environmental benefits depends on the source material, land use, processing, transport and how emissions are accounted for; “renewable” should not automatically be read as impact-free.

Geothermal energy

Geothermal systems use heat from beneath the Earth's surface. Availability and system design vary significantly by location.

Renewable energy and everyday sustainability

Energy choices are only one part of household impact. Energy efficiency, travel, food and how much we consume also matter. When buying homeware, use the same evidence-led approach: buy for a genuine need, check complete materials and choose products you can maintain and use regularly.

Is all renewable energy zero-carbon?

No energy system is literally impact-free across construction, operation and end of life. Renewable sources can have much lower operational greenhouse-gas emissions than fossil-fuel generation, but the complete lifecycle still matters.

There is no universal answer. Geography, grid needs, cost, storage, reliability and environmental constraints influence the appropriate mix.
